10 Basic Emotions We All Share

Emotions That Make Us Human

If there's one thing that unites us all, it's emotions! Whether we'd like to admit it or not, feelings underlie everything. From snap decisions spurred on by a moment of fear to lasting choices driven by deep regret, emotions are pivotal in shaping how we live our lives. Running the gamut from joy to despair, here are ten common emotions that all human beings share despite our perceived differences.

1. Joy

There’s nothing like the rush of happiness when something goes right in our lives. Joy can be as little as savoring your favorite food or as grand as achieving a lifelong goal. It’s the emotion that gives us energy, motivation, and a reason to smile.

2. Sadness

While often considered a negative feeling, sadness can also serve a vital purpose by helping us process loss and understand our needs. It can help us ultimately grow stronger through these times. So, tears feel heavy, but they also lead to healing.

3. Anger

Anger also gets a bad reputation, and that’s fine. However, we can’t skip the fact that it’s not always destructive. Anger can spark action, alert us to injustice, and give us the drive to address issues head-on. When we manage it well, anger can lead to positive outcomes, too.

4. Fear

If there’s an emotion to save countless lives, it’s fear. Whether it’s a sudden reaction to danger or the anxiety before a big presentation, fear is there to protect us from a lot of harm. This feeling sharpens our senses and pushes us to take action when needed.

5. Disgust

Which feeling helps us avoid things that might harm us, like spoiled food or toxic situations? It’s disgust, an automatic response of our bodies that protects us from contamination or danger. In many ways, disgust helps us maintain physical and emotional safety.

6. Shame

Shame serves as a mirror that reflects our actions and urges us to reconsider our choices. Fortunately, this uncomfortable feeling is a catalyst for self-improvement and understanding of social norms and behavior, finally teaching us to be accountable for our actions.

7. Love

Arguably, the most powerful emotion, love, drives us to do things we could never imagine. Be it forming deep connections or making sacrifices for others. Love is the ultimate motivator that strengthens bonds between people, animals, and communities by sparking compassion and empathy.

8. Guilt

Guilt comes when we feel responsible for something we’ve done—or failed to do—that has hurt others. This emotion can weigh heavily on us and urge us to make amends and seek forgiveness. Ultimately, guilt is responsible for promoting growth and accountability.

9. Pride

We feel proud when we accomplish something meaningful or live up to our standards. Pride is not just about holding self-worth in high regard. It is the harbinger of confidence that drives us to aim higher and celebrate our victories.

10. Empathy

Genuine relationships thrive on moments of connection and care. Empathy drives these moments, letting us feel what others feel and respond with compassion. It’s what turns a kind word to a friend or an act of support for a stranger into something deeply meaningful.
